Ask ten agencies what they do and you'll get the same answer in ten fonts: paid social, SEO, PPC, web builds, creative. The deliverables are identical because deliverables are commodities. Anyone can run a Meta campaign. The platforms have spent a decade making sure of it.
What isn't a commodity is the decision behind the campaign. Which audience deserves the budget. Which channel to starve. When to call a creative dead and when to give it one more week. Whether the problem is your ads or your landing page or, awkwardly, your offer. Those calls are where money is made and lost, and they don't appear on a rate card.
The thinking is the product
This is why every Regent engagement opens with a whitepaper rather than an invoice. Before we touch a budget, we write: your market, your position in it, what your data already says, and what we'd do in your seat. It forces us to have a point of view that can survive being put in writing, and it gives you a clean exit if the thinking doesn't convince you. You've risked a fortnight, not a quarter.
If a consultancy's strategy can't survive being written down, it shouldn't survive being paid for.
The whitepaper-first model has a useful side effect: it filters both ways. Clients who want a vendor to take orders find us frustrating. Clients who want a partner with opinions, including unwelcome ones, tend to stay for years. Our retainers are old enough to prove it.
Why this matters more in the AI era
AI has finished the commoditisation of execution. Copy, creative variants, reports, campaign builds, the marginal cost of "doing" is collapsing, and any agency selling hours of doing is selling a melting asset. What AI hasn't commoditised is judgement: knowing which of the hundred things you could now do cheaply is the one worth doing.
So we run lean on purpose. Senior specialists, orchestrated AI, no account layers. The economics of a small team with leverage beat the economics of a big team with overheads, and the client feels the difference in who turns up to the call.
What we do changes every quarter as platforms shift. How we think doesn't. That's the part worth buying.
